Susan Eyre
Artist Statement
Susan Eyre’s practice explores commonly held ideals reflected in the shared fantasies of secret gardens, archetypal romantic scenes and ideas of paradise set against an urban reality.
She draws on cultural references and contemporary situations to construct landscapes that appear familiar yet are inauthentic. Ambiguously desirable these landscapes acknowledge an urge to create a space that is a haven of beauty and harmony.
Her interests are in everyday experiences where aspirations override actuality to reveal underlying dreams. Her work considers the influence of a collective aesthetic sensibility on the desire for perfection and is inspired by the power of illusion to offer an emotional escape from the disparity between aspiration for the sublime and mundane actuality.
